Bases

Lace Weight

Fated Mates Lace (formerly Moraine Lake Lace)

2-ply 72/28 Brushed Superkid Mohair/Mulberry Silk ($39/$43CAD Tonal/Variegated)

The softer and rarer Superkid mohair produces the softest, most luxurious mohair/silk yarn ever. Two strands of mulberry silk hold the mohair fibres in place to add radiance and strength. Gentle enough for next to skin wear.

This is a super light and airy yarn and can be worked at many different gauges. It produces gossamer-like items when large needles or hooks are used and soft, fluffy items at tighter gauges. It can also be carried with another yarn to add a delicate haze and to produce a surprisingly warm fabric.

Compared to Suri, it has a lighter, larger halo.

459yds/1.8oz, 420m/50g

Recommended Needle Size: 3 - 4mm (US 2-6) needles

Gauge: 32sts x 40 rows over 10cm (4 inches) on 3.25mm (US 3) needles

Forced Proximity Lace (formerly Lake Louise Lace)

Single-ply 75/25 Brushed Baby Suri Alpaca/Mulberry Silk ($37/$41CAD Tonal/Variegated)

*Note: We have a new supplier for this post-The Road So Far collection. The old suri base was 76/24 Suri/Silk.

Lustrous, smooth and soft, baby suri alpaca is wrapped around a silk core then brushed to produce a supersoft yarn with a light and airy halo (more subtle and softer than you get with mohair). This yarn is wonderfully versatile and can be used in a wide range of projects. It knits up beautifully on its own on a wide range of needle sizes and can be used as a light DK through to bulky. Combine it with a fingering/sock weight or DK weight yarn to add warmth and texture without weight to jumpers, scarves and cowls.

328yds/1.8oz, 300m/50g

Recommended Needle Size: 3 - 6mm needles

Gauge: 18-25 sts over 10cm/4 inches

Morally Grey Lace

Single-ply 65/20/15 SW Merino/Silk/Yak ($43/$47CAD Tonal/Variegated)

A new luxurious base--this soft, shiny, drapey yarn will be your new favourite for any project. The single ply of this lace weight makes it great for holding double with another yarn for added durability or on its own for some extra soft next-to-skin comfort. Its natural warm gray colour adds an extra layer of depth and moodiness to each colourway.

872yds/1.8oz, 797m/100g

Fingering Weight

Arranged Marriage Fingering (formerly Dead Man's Flats Sock)

Single-ply 56/44 SW Extrafine Merino/Superkid Mohair ($43/$47CAD Tonal/Variegated)

This singles yarn is next to skin soft, slightly fuzzy and has a beautiful pearly lustre due to the fineness of the mohair used. The mohair is not brushed but the singles construction allows the mohair fibres to bloom and form a delicate halo around the strand. It knits up into warm and lightweight items. Although technically a fingering weight yarn, you can also treat it like a thicker sport weight yarn, and knit on larger needles. This allows the mohair fibres more room to bloom and reach their full fuzzy potential. It is delightful worked up into lightweight shawls, cardigans, hats and cowls.

Recommended Needle Size: 2.5 - 4mm needles

The extrafine (19.5 micron) merino wool makes this yarn luxuriously soft and bouncy for next to skin comfort. A little nylon is added for extra durabilty and 5% gold stellina for a subtle sparkle. It has such a beautifully subtle sparkle halo that isn't over-the-top in your face glitter and I love it. This yarn is so versatile and can be used for any next to skin project (scarves, jumpers etc) as well as items where a little more durability is required such as socks and gloves.

The main factor determining the quality of merino wool is its softness, which depends upon the fineness of the fibres. This yarn uses extrafine merino (19.5 microns), which is some of the finest commercially available. This results in a luxuriously soft and bouncy yarn for next to skin comfort. A little nylon is added for extra durability. This yarn is so versatile and can be used for any next to skin project (scarves, jumpers etc), as well as items where a little more durability is required such as socks and gloves.

2-ply 85/15 SW Extrafine Merino/Nylon ($35/$39CAD Tonal/Variegated, $48 Sock Set)

Very similar to our regular Banff sock base, this yarn just has a different ply to it. This two-ply high twist yields a plump, bouncy yarn with a bumpy texture that is great for colourwork and texture sure as lacework. 4-ply 75/20/5 SW Extrafine Merino/Nylon/Silver Lurex ($36/$40CAD Tonal/Variegated, $49CAD Sock Set, $46 Mini Bundle)

Three plies of merino/nylon are spun with a ply of lurex for a soft, durable yarn with sparkle. There is enough lurex to add sparkle, without the scratchiness often associated with lurex yarns, and extrafine merino for a soft handle. The added nylon adds durability too, making this yarn perfect for next to skin projects, socks, and gloves with a little added sparkle.

A soft single-ply (21.5 micron) merino and linen blend yarn with texture and a gentle tweedy haze. The natural linen is prepared to vary in thickness to give the yarn a textured finish with subtle drape. Slow Burn Worsted (formerly Bow River Worsted)

4-ply SW British Bluefaced Leicester ($36/$40 Tonal/Variegated)

BFL fibre is fine, silky, lustrous and strong - an incredibly versatile fibre. This wool is naturally soft, but also good for items that are subject to wear such as socks, mittens, sweaters and hats. They drape well without heaviness due to the natural crimp of the fibre and, with long staple fibres, these yarns are less prone to pilling. This fibre also has a natural lustre that emphasizes the shape of stitches, so it is ideal for textured stitches and cables.

At 25-26 microns, the fibres are less fine than merino, however the BFL fibres have large, smooth scales on their surface so they feel smoother and have a characteristic pearly sheen to them. They also have a higher lanolin content for a more silky feel. BFL yarns are a great introduction to the diverse world of British wool breeds and ideal for those looking to expand beyond merino wool.

This yarn is worsted spun from extra long staple fibres to produce a yarn that is fine and strong with a silky feel. It is soft and cushiony with a slight sheen, and knits up quickly--ideal for last minute gifts! One hank is enough for a snuggly cowl, hat, fingerless mitts or headband.
